You are a successful architect, working mum with 2 kids. How do you manage spending time with kids and your work? Any tips for other working mums?

It’s easy to get overwhelmed trying to do it all, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.  I realised that it’s not possible to give 100 percent to both my family and my work at the same time.  The balance is constantly shifting between one or the other and that’s ok!  So my advice is be efficient, try to relax and more importantly save some time for yourself.  

Hawaii is beautiful. What cultural differences do you see between Singapore and Hawaii? Where is a must-visit place in Hawaii?

Both Singapore and Hawaii are islands with multi-ethnic cultures, so they appear pretty similar.  But, Singapore is much more glamorous and metropolitan, whereas Hawaii is laid back, ultra casual, with a huge outdoors lifestyle.  Growing up there was amazing.  There are too many must-visit places to see but swimming off the beach at Waikiki never gets old to me.

We had so much fun shooting you, you are so spontaneous, fun and easy-going. How would you describe yourself in 3 words?

Thank you, shooting was so much fun for me!  I would describe myself as silly, strong and smart.  I’m a pretty simple person!

Architects are known to be creative and could build the most unimaginable. Which structure in the world left the great impression on you? 

I visited St. Peter’s cathedral in the Vatican when I was an architectural student and was floored.  Designed by Michelangelo and built over a span of hundreds of years, the amount of human creativity and soul in that building was extremely tangible and I had an emotional response to it.

What sports do you currently do now pls? Any great sports hangout place to share? 

Being Hawaiian, I have a love of water sports and I swim, surf, SUP, and I recently tried kite surfing in Bintan which was also awesome.  A great hangout for water sports in Singapore is Aloha Sea Sports Center.

How would you use this term “Crazy Rich Chinese”?

Crazy rich Chinese are a big part of the reason why I have a job today.

Which American Fashion Designer do you like? 

TBH I don’t know much about fashion!

What is your ideal holiday?

I love ski holidays, beach holidays, city holidays, anywhere with beautiful scenery, good food, good company, and good cocktails at sunset.

What or who are your style influences?

My mom is the epitome of class and I’ll spend the rest of my life trying (and failing) to look half as good as she does. 

What is the hardest life hurdle you’ve gone through and what did you take away from it?

It was difficult starting out in San Francisco as a young architect. I had a tiny studio apartment, no money and few friends. I ended up learning a lot, making a ton of friends, and having some of the most amazing and hilarious life experiences during that time.  My take away from that was I could make a life for myself and it was very empowering.

What is the one life lesson you learned that can’t be taught in school?

Doing well in school does not necessarily translate into doing well in life or enjoying it, and that is the most important thing.

What is your definition of success?

Feeling good about yourself and having positive and meaningful relationships with family and friends.
